Nika dinner

25 January 2024

LOCATION: @nika.projectspace

Mirna Bamieh, Sour Things: The Kitchen

ArtKōrero, together with Nika Project Space, hosted a ‘Ladies Only Dinner’, drawing inspiration from the work ‘Sour Things: The Kitchen’ of Mirna Bamieh, which was part of the gallery’s group show ‘I Can No Longer Produce the Limits of My Own Body’, curated by Nadine Khalil.

This event offered a unique experience for collectors and art patrons to experience the immersive work. The evening unfolded with a thought-provoking intervention into Bamieh’s work, ‘Sour Things: The Kitchen.’ Live reading of artist’s texts provided immersion in the atmosphere of this total work. The activation was followed by a dinner, featuring a curated menu based on Mirna Bamieh’s recipes of traditional Palestinian cuisine, which the artist carefully collects to protect them from disappearing.

Sustainable Solutions in Culture - Panel discussion

3 December 2023

LOCATION: ME Dubai (Atrium)

We live in a world when convenience and accessibility often overrules what is eco-conscious or more sustainable. We need to shift to thinking about sustainable solutions as being an integral part to our business practices, our creative process, our lifestyle routines, etc. – thinking of solutions at the onset rather than as an afterthought. This panel focuses on how we can think about sustainability as an integral part of our creative process and everyday choices to create systemic change through business & behavior.

In Celebration of COP28, ArtKōrero is collaborating with sustainable creative agency BLANK, to host a panel discussion on Sustainable Solutions in Culture surrounded by the Kico Camacho sustainability themed exhibition in the atrium of the ME Dubai.

Sepideh Ilsley’s First Solo Show “It comes in waves” in Dubai

15 November - 10 January

LOCATION: Foundry Downtown Dubai

ArtKōrero is pleased to present Sepideh Ilsley’s first Middle Eastern solo exhibition "It comes in waves," where the intricate interplay of sculptural forms takes center stage, mirroring the intriguing depths of the artist's subconscious. The title itself encapsulates the organic manner in which these shapes materialize, reminiscent of the rhythmic ebb and flow of the tides.

The title of this show “It comes in waves” refers to the way my organic shapes come to me from my subconscious and how creativity knows no time. It arrives unbidden, in waves unpredictable. Like the tides, it cannot be forced but embraced, and in this unpredictability lies the essence of artistic freedom and inspiration. With this body of work I also wanted to explore painting as a meditative activity. How being constantly open to the possibility of whatever arises, the act of painting these fluid shapes and the use of a spare language of abstraction can function as a form of therapy, the way they help me digest the world and are representative of my life experience.
- Sepideh Ilsley

Sepideh Ilsley is an internationally-recognised abstract artist, born in Shiraz, Iran, grew up in Sweden and based in Australia. Ilsley’s contemplative discourse unveils a profound journey marked by an unyielding commitment to poetic expression and exploration, a lyrical testament to the passage of time, encapsulating fleeting moments in tangible shapes

Isshaq Ismail at Efie Gallery

28.2.2023 - 29.5.2023

Location: Efie gallery

Efie gallery will present a new body of blue monochromatic works by Ghanaian painter Isshaq Ismail, which he is currently producing in residency with the gallery.

  • Isshaq Ismail’s new monochromatic series explores the idea of repetition and question notions of beauty, depicting figures with complex, ambivalent moods placed against a series of serene, utopian backdrops. Born in Accra in 1989, Ismail is interested in advocating for the masses, inspired by the moods of people he observes on the streets of Ghana, but depicting figures that are universal and anonymous. His gritty, non-conformist approach is evident in his thick and emotive impasto-style application of paint.

mahmoud Obaidi - MEEM Gallery

28.2.2023 - 30.5.2023

Location: MEEM gallery

Meem Gallery presents an exhibition of new work by the acclaimed Iraqi artist Mahmoud Obaidi.

  • Speaking truth to power has never been something Mahmoud Obaidi has shied away from in his work. The artist was introduced to the notion of injustice from his adolescence, and has since spent much of his life processing the destruction of his homeland and the isolation of exile. At the same time, he has found commonality in the suffering of a myriad of communities around the world who have also faced the brutal force of racism, occupation and inconceivable loss. In creating art which confronts these complex issues, Obaidi looks beyond simplistic politics and perceptions of identity, instead seeking to uncover and understand trauma from a historical, structural and geographical lens. As with much of Obaidi’s oeuvre, this latest body of work is made up of a multitude of layers which lie behind the external, visible yet abstract structures, shapes and colour, revealing a visual inquiry which goes far beyond the difficult topics which he seeks to tackle - namely colonisation and genocide - and simultaneously forces him to look within and explore his own personal sense of displacement.

    About the Artist

Mahmoud Obaidi is an Iraqi conceptual artist who lives and works between Doha and Beirut. Obtaining a BA in fine art from the Academy of Fine Arts, Baghdad in 1990, Obaidi went on to complete a Master’s of Fine Arts at the University of Guelph in Canada in 1999. The artist has also received a diploma in New Media from Ryerson University, Toronto and, in 1998, a further diploma in film producing from HIF Film Academy, Los Angeles.

Characterized by contemporary politics and a sardonic sense of humour, Obaidi works in many materials, allowing the concept behind a particular work to determine his choice of media.

Mosquito Effects will run at Meem Gallery from the 28th of February until the 30th of May 2023.
VIP Reception will be hosted 6-9pm, 28th February

AIDA MULUNEH, EFIE GALLERY

12.1.2023 - 24.2.2023

LOCATION: EFIE GALLERY

ARTKŌRERO hosted a group of collectors at the opening of AIDA MULUNEH's solo exhibition, “THE ART OF ADVOCACY

  • Photographer Aida Muluneh shares striking images from her 2018 commission for NGO WaterAid, shot on the salt flats of Dallol in Ethiopia, famous for its hydrothermal springs; the barren backdrop contrasts with majestic female figures inspired by women Muluneh saw carrying water.

The Art of Advocacy” surveys how the artist uses photography to raise awareness about issues affecting many African people today — from drought to tropical disease — but with dignity and imagination. “Photography, regardless of where you come from or your economic status, is an integral part of our society,” she says. “The image is the strongest thing, it’s not politicians talking to people.”

Born in Addis Ababa in 1974, Muluneh is a contemporary photographer reframing global perceptions of the African continent. She left Ethiopia as an infant while the country was in the midst of a devastating civil war and spent the next decade in England, Yemen, Greece and Cyprus before settling in Canada in 1985. She received a BA in film, radio, and television from Howard University in 2000, and gravitated towards the work of Chester Higgins Jr., Richard Avedon and Gordon Parks.

Following her studies, she worked at The Washington Post and began questioning the mass media’s perception of African Americans and the African continent. In 2007, she returned to Addis Ababa, where she continues to live and work as a fine artist, commercial #photographer, #photojournalist, educator and cultural entrepreneur.
